What’s Up Buff State Writers?

June 2015

Hello Writer!

Theresa Wyatt self published her first poetry chapbook, Arrowheads Everywhere in 2014. The title is inspired by Native American imagery and general symbolism as it relates to aim and finding direction. The cover photograph is of an arrowhead plant with one large leaf pointing north. When I asked her about the title, Theresa said it came from the last line in her poem, “To Burchfield, The Four Seasons.”

Theresa cited Carl Sandburg as one of her major influences. She admires his social activist commitment in highlighting the common man through his prose and poetry. She especially likes his Chicago poems and his war poems. She also has an interest in writing as a therapeutic process and has many poems published in medical humanities journals.

A recent and new poem that she wrote in honor of her father, "Dementia Unit Visit," has been published in the spring edition of The Medical Literary Messenger (Univ of Va Medical School). That address and access is:

Hello Published!

Matt Gryta was the editor of the Buffalo State Record his sophomore and senior years.  He is a veteran crime reporter based in Buffalo, New York. A staff reporter for the Buffalo News for four decades. He has spent his career covering gritty stories of crime, punishment and violence in Western New York.

He has two books published so far, The Real Teflon Don, the first disclosure of the secret New York State Police unit that so successfully tapped into the telephone calls of one of the Mafia's most powerful crime families that the FBI began borrowing its transcripts of those calls. Gryta has also published Joey 22, the first non-fiction account of one of the nation's most notorious serial killers who was based in Buffalo. Gryta was one of the principal reporters covering the story of the Joey Christopher crime saga.

Hello Publishers!

There are literary journals, magazines and newsletters to start publishing or continue to publish your creative writing. The dedication of the editors is important for the literary and arts community but without writers and artist, there is nothing for the editors to do.  Below are only a few I met through the Buffalo Small Press Book Fair and readings posted on the Buffalo State Writer’s Facebook page. There are contest too!
